RAJINI'S SENTIMENT IN ENDHIRAN
Great people across the world become role models to many. Almost everyone, if not all, have some sort of sentiment that they follow. If the US President Barack Obama fought against law to use his Blackberry (fondly called as B-1) in the White House as a personal sentiment, Sachin Tendulkar never forgets to tie his left thigh pad first before he bats in a cricket match. We always idolize great people and we expect them not to have such silly sentiments. But aren't they humans after all? What is the bond between people and their beloved sentiments?
First of all, let us not confuse sentiments with superstitions. Superstitions come across as an irrational belief but sentiments are not. So, does Rajinikanth, our beloved Superstar, have such sentiments? Of course yes! He may have many personal beliefs and sentiments, but when it comes to movies, he surely does have an inclination towards reptiles and insects. Snakes in particular.
Who can forget Balu, in the 1984 movie Thambikku Entha Ooru, trying to get away from a snake crawling upon him? The movie was a super-
hit in Tamil and marked the existence of a super hero amongst us. Is that the start of a sentiment which the superstar believes? May be. But there are so many instances in movies after that where Rajini has used either insects or reptiles as his lucky charm. Insects? Yes. We never stop laughing Rajini's antics in trying to squash a fly in Velaikaran. So is the scene in Dharmathin Thalaivan where he creates a ruckus while shooing away a cockroach.
The snake sentiment continued in Annamalai and Arunachalam too. So much so that it ensured that the coming years belonged to the Superstar. Padayappa's 'snake comedy' is still being replicated in movies. The snake sentiment became bigger with Chandramukhi, when it was rumored at that time that the director included the 'snake portion' in the movie only on Rajini's behest. If we thought, the sentiment ended with Chandramukhi, P. Vasu ensured that he designed snake shaped boats in one of Kuselan's songs.
Wonder what does this have to do with Endhiran? One close look at the trailer indicates that the snake and the insect sentiment have taken graphically huge proportions. We can notice the 'Robot' Rajini speaking to "Ranguski", the mosquito. Ok, the insect sentiment continues. Where is the snake? Didn’t you notice the huge snake, graphically made up of Rajini Robots, attacking and swallowing a police car in the movie trailer? Watch the trailer again if you have not noticed it. Now that’s what we call a very expensive sentiment!
