His previous movie grossed almost Rs.100 crore according to unofficial sources, and according to official sources like this document, Chandramukhi grossed Rs.60 crore, while the years biggest hit Lage Raho Munnabhai was at Rs.66 crores. The document also ranks him as the highest paid actor in at Rs.19 crore a film. Even the Khans don't seem to able to demand that much! So much for being the most famous stars of Bollywood! In fact, he is revered so much across the state in which he stays that his name is never taken in isolation, it is always either accompanied by Superstar or replaced with Thalaivar (meaning Leader in Tamil)! With his latest film lined up for release on June 15th, there is a hype that surrounds the (just released) promotional material of the movie that surpasses the fame of a Khan hit movie post release! The only known promotional material is available here. Check it out! Superstar looks younger by a few decades (he is on the wrong side of the fifties now, I guess)!Sivaji - the boss is being touted as the movie that's going to rock not only Tamil Nadu, but even Japan, where the Superstar has a loyal fan base so much that PM Manmohan Singh once mentioned that Rajnikanth helped Indo-Japanese ties. The NRIs in various parts of the world are awaiting the release of this movie with bated breath. Rajni movies are big grossers worldwide partly because of the vast spread of the South Indian population across the world and partly because of the charm, charisma and magnetism of our Superstar!"Sivaji - the boss" also sees the coming together of three legends of the Tamil Film Industry for the first time. Rajnikanth-A.R. Rahman-Shankar(director). In fact, maybe I should add a fourth one that stands by the name of AVM Productions - one of the oldest production houses in the history of Indian cinema. A.R. Rahman needs no introduction to the world today. Shankar happens to be the most successful director of all the contemporary directors in Tamil industry. His previous release Anniyan, with National Award winner Vikram in the main role, was the second biggest grosser (Rs.57 crore) of the year behind Chandramukhi and was based on Multiple Personality Disorder with a powerful social message. Shankar has developed this unique and difficult ability to drive home social messages through a purely commercial framework. Though the effectiveness of such methods can be debated upon forever, the success is there for everyone to see. What remains to be seen is whether Sivaji - the boss will rake in the moolah as expected. Rumoured to have sold for close to Rs.7 crores per territory, it is expected that the opening of the movie is going to be something the industry hasn't seen yet and will probably take another Rajni release to emulate this! All in all, the wait is getting to be very desperate. I for one will be seen in the queues the day the plans open for this movie. Want to watch it with all the fanfare that surrounds the first day of a Rajni movie. The frenzy generated by his movies are to be seen and experienced with the junta and not by sitting in box seats in the cozy comfort of the balcony class! The noise that emanates on seeing the Superstar appear on the screen with one alphabet-by-one is to be experienced in the theatre. The mangalarthis on the appearance of the superstar on the silver screen, the coin-throwing, the instant dances in the aisles, the frenzied tears in some eyes, the energy, the music and the celebration is an experience that only the real Superstar can offer. Rajni is the real Superstar of our time. Period.
